The glass in my door broke and the glass shop will not sell me a piece of plate glass to replace it. They say I need to buy "safety glass." Are they trying to cheat me?No, but they may be saving your life - or keeping you out of legal trouble. You may not know that glass is one of the few building materials actually regulated by the Federal government and that usage of glass in and near doors falls under strict Consumer Product Safety Commission rules. Quality glass shops know that all glass in doors must meet the requirements of CPSC 16 CFR 1201 safety glazing - which generally means that either tempered or laminated glass or plastic must be used Back to TopOne piece of glass in my insulating window broke. The glass company is telling me that I need to replace the whole window. Is this true?Yes. The reason that your window had insulating properties is because there was a SEALED airspace between both pieces of glass. When one of the pieces breaks, not only has that glass been destroyed, but the sealed airspace has been destroyed as well. The whole unit is replaced in such cases. Is it possible to reseal the glass in the same frame? The answer is possibly "yes" from a technical standpoint, but 'no' from a practical one. The time and cost involved to retrofit such units would be much more expensive than buying new ones. Back to TopHow do you clean Plexiglass and Lexan?Use a mild dish soap and soft cloth. Window cleaner and paper towels are NOT RECOMENDED they will scratch the material. Back to TopWhy does a mirror turn black in some areas but not on all?Glass is plated with "silvering" through an electroplating process. When chemicals or moisture gets to the back of the silvering, it can break down the bond that the glass and sliver has and the silvering will chip away. There are a few ways to prevent this 1st you can request that we seal the edges, sealing the edges can help prevent damange. The 2nd way to prevent damage to silvering is to allow air to get to the back of the mirror so that moisture and cleaners cannot get trapped behind the mirror. The 3rd way is to use only non-ammonia cleaners and only spray just enough cleaner to clean the glass not soak it. Often in time, especially older non-electroplated mirrors, the silvering will eventually lose its bond with the glass. Back to TopCan tempered glass be cut?No. Tempered glass is manufactured the size needed and because of the nature of tempered glass, when it is cut or broken it breaks into hundreds of tiny cube like
pcs, less likely to injure the person who broke the glass. Back to TopHow long will my glass order take? Most orders completed within 5 working days. Back to Top |
